My favorite idea is burnishing rims and feet while leather hard to compress and assure that no grit pops out after firing. I’ve finished off rims with chamois and with cosmetic sponges, so they look smooth, but burnishing gives the smoothest surface, which is what I want my lips to touch or my fingers to run over when I handle a piece of functional pottery.
